From muddy boots and coats to bags, shoes and everyday clutter, a well designed boot room can make life a touch easier.

Every home has one. That spot where shoes pile up, coats get thrown over chairs and bags seem to collect by the door. For some, it’s the hallway. For others, the back entrance or utility room.
And if you’ve got children, dogs or enjoy great outdoors, keeping all your gear organised can feel like a never-ending challenge. It’s one reason boot rooms have become such a popular feature in home design. But you don’t need a country house or a huge amount of space to enjoy the benefits.
Sometimes, all it takes is a little clever thinking.
Practical doesn’t have to mean ordinary
Traditionally associated with country houses, boot rooms are increasingly being incorporated into all sorts of homes.
Recent features in House & Garden and Ideal Home have highlighted how these hardworking spaces can combine practical storage with attractive cabinetry, natural materials and thoughtful finishing touches. That’s exactly how I think they should be approached.
A boot room needs to cope with everyday life. Muddy boots, wet coats, school bags, dog leads and all those things you want close to hand but don’t necessarily want on display. Built-in seating with shoe storage underneath, tall cupboards for coats, hooks for everyday essentials and drawers for smaller items can make a big difference. With the right choice of cabinetry, colours, handles and finishes, the room can look just as considered as the rest of your home.
Practical enough for muddy boots. Beautiful enough to be proud of.
Making the most of the space you’ve got
Not every home has room for a dedicated boot room. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create something that works just as well.
An underused hallway, back entrance or part of a utility room might offer more possibilities than you think. At Palmer & Palmer, I start by looking at how you use the space and what you need to store.
Do you need somewhere to sit while putting on shoes? Storage for children’s bags? A cupboard for outdoor clothing? Somewhere for the dog’s thing. Then we can look at how fitted furniture, seating and storage can work together without making the space feel cramped.
The trick isn’t simply adding more cupboards.
It’s making sure everything has a place — and that it’s in the right place.

You probably know Palmer & Palmer for our kitchens, but we bring the same approach to design, quality and craftsmanship to other rooms throughout your home.
From fitted bedrooms and dressing rooms to utility rooms, home offices and bespoke living-room furniture, it’s all about making the most of your space.
And sometimes it’s the smaller, hardworking areas of a home where good design makes the biggest difference.
